TUESDAY (9/28): Grampa & Gramma thought today they would just get off the ship and find their own way around. Then they found out that Ephesus is 15 miles from port and that the taxi drivers don’t speak English. So Grampa raced down to the excursion office and got tickets to a tour. He called Gramma and said be ready in 5 minutes! She hadn’t even brushed her teeth yet! But I’m really glad because we went on the best tour and I met my new girlfriend, Bahar (our tour guide). I wanted her to come home with us! We went first to the Basilica of St. John and then to the tomb where he is buried. We went to the house where the Virgin Mary lived out her life after Jesus was crucified. It was amazingly peaceful there, even with thousands of visitors. We finished the tour at the ancient city of Ephesus. It is an amazing place. The ruins date from 400 to 300 B.C. We saw where John and Paul preached to the Ephesians. We walked the whole thing. It was a big city that used to be a port city. Now the ocean is 3 to 4 miles away. We found out that in the public bathrooms the slaves were sent in first to warm the marble seats and there was an orchestra playing to drown out the sounds! Guess our jobs aren’t so bad after all
